Seattle Mariners at Los Angeles Angels: 05/30 game thread

Jose Lopez just brought his team back from the dead — and we mean dead and buried. His three-run homer to left in the ninth tied it 3-3 with two out, coming off closer Brian Fuentes and has this crowd in a state of shock. Singles by Adrian Beltre and Russell Branyan put two on with two out and Lopez then pulled the trigger on a 1-1 pitch. Talk about a shock. Miguel Batista now takes the mound in the bottom of the ninth. Hold on.

8:12 p.m.: We talked about how the first team to blink defensively might lose this game. Russell Branyan made an error on a grounder by Maicer Izturis to start the seventh inning. One out later, that’s Izturis you see crossing the plate with the game’s first run on a double over the center fielder’s head by Erick Aybar. So, it’s a 1-0 lead for the Angels.

Say, what do we have here? Why, someone has left me a spankin’ new Rally Monkey checkers set. Wow, let’s play.

I’ll see your two Halos and raise you three primates. Man, what a fun game.
8:05 p.m.: Thought for a moment that we’d seen that “defensive miscue” I was talking about earlier when Felix Hernandez threw a wild-pitch on that strikeout to Vladimir Guerrero. Angels put two on after the ball got away from Rob Johnson, but Hernandez struck out Kendry Morales to take a scoreless game to the seventh. Three double-plays, including one in that sixth inning, have helped Hernandez immensely.
Why oh why is Matt Palmer still out there pitching? I mean, he’s done an OK job, but this is unreal. It ain’t the second coming of Zack Greinke.
7:32 p.m.: Five innings done here and it’s looking like the first defensive miscue is going to cost somebody the game. Still no score and both pitchers have used double-plays to escape serious trouble. Felix Hernandez in the second and fourth innings and Matt Palmer in the first. Palmer is seriously one of the worst undefeated pitchers I’ve seen two months into a season. Should have lost to Seattle the last time these teams played. With a little more patience by Mariners hitters, he could have been out of this game already. He’s at 85 pitches as we start the sixth. Hernandez is dealing tonight, with four strikeouts in five innings, but his team needs to score some runs. This game is up for grabs.
7:28 p.m.: Felix Hernandez got into some trouble in the third inning, but a first-pitch double-play grounder by Bobby Abreu was converted 4-6-3 and we’re still scoreless heading into the fourth. Yuniesky Betancourt did a good job of avoiding the Chone Figgins takeout slide at second base. On offense, the Mariners look pretty ineffective thus far against Matt Palmer. They’ve gotten some baserunners, but the situational hitting has yet to show up. Palmer is up to 56 pitches already with none out in the fourth, so some patience by the M’s could knock him out early.

6:16 p.m.: Ichiro wasted little time extending his hit streak to 23 games with a leadoff single in the first inning. That ties him for the third-longest streak in franchise history and puts him two away from his own team mark. Yuniesky Betancourt bunted him to second and then Ichiro took third on a wild-pitch. Adrian Beltre was hit by a pitch to put two on, but then Ken Griffey Jr. grounded into a 3-6-3 double-play.

We had the reigning Miss America sing the national anthem tonight. I was hoping for Miss California, since she seems pretty entertaining. But anyhow, the song went well and then, here, you can see her offering up her crown to some deserving serviceman in need of a head covering.
