Postgame notes

Manager Don Wakamatsu was asked afterward about the consideration of using a defensive substitute for Wladimir Balentien.
“At some point with a guy like Wlade, you’re trying to find out what you really have,” Wakamatsu said. “A young player like that, and if you start substituting early in his career, we have to see what he can do out there. Those are things that obviously he needs to work on, a play like that in a tight situation. As we go forward, we will make those adjustments.”
The Mariners are using situations like this to evaluate the players on hand, letting a player such as Balentien sink or swim to make evaluations for the future.
For his part, Balentien couldn’t have been more straight-up in answering questions after the game.
“It’s a play that I have to make,” he said. “I have no excuse to not make that play.”
Did he get a good jump on the ball?
“I had a round-about so that’s why the ball beat me,” he said.
He was asked about the difficulty of judging a ball that is hit like that one was.
It wasn’t the distance of Matt Tolbert’s hit, but the direction Balentien ran.
“I got a bad jump on it, and that’s why I wasn’t able to make the play,” Balentien said.
