Game thread, Mariners vs. Rockies, June 14 (with Shawn Kelley update)

UPDATE 2:54 P.M.: The rain delay didn’t invigorate the Mariners’ bats. Roy Corcoran is still on the mound as the Mariners take the field for the bottom of the sixth.
UPDATE 2:50 P.M.: The fifth-inning error on the Mariners has been charged to first baseman Russ Branyan rather than Jose Lopez. It’s a good change. It appeared as if Branyan just whiffed on the throw.
UPDATE 2:45 P.M.: Josh Fogg takes over on the mound as the game resumes after a 55-minute rain delay that was really a tornado-warning delay.
UPDATE 2:30 P.M.: The game will re-start at 3:50 p.m. (2:50 Seattle time). Will Hammel be back out on the mound for Colorado? I doubt it.
UPDATE 2:28 P.M.: The tarp is coming off the field. I think we survived.
UPDATE 1:53 P.M.: The rain delay has begun. I missed it by eight minutes. We are also under a tornado warning. Auntie Em! Auntie Em!
UPDATE 1:48 P.M.: This message just appeared on the scoreboard: We are currently under a SEVERE thunderstorm warning until 3:15 p.m There is the potential for heavy rain, cloud to ground lightning, and large hail. Sounds fun.
UPDATE 1:41 P.M. (BOTTOM OF FIFTH): This one is slipping away (or has slipped away). Chris Iannetta’s three-run double makes it 6-1, Rockies.
UPDATE 1:31 P.M. (MIDDLE OF THE FIFTH) Well, it’s an official game, and just in the nick of time. The rain is starting to fall — but the game is continuing, for now. Dexter Fowler, who just hauled down Russ Branyan’s drive on the warning track, can really go get ’em in center. A good center fielder is vital in this ballpark. 2-1 Rockies.
UPDATE 1:18 P.M.: That was Hammel’s first career hit.
UPDATE 1:15 P.M.: Griffey, who just struck out looking, is really struggling — but you didn’t need me to tell you that.
The clouds are darkening. I’m going to predict a rain delay within the next half hour. 2-1, Rockies.
UPDATE 12:50 P.M. (BOTTOM OF 2ND): I’m not sure wny Branyan cut off Ichiro’s throw home on Tulowitzki’s sac fly. Sure looked like he had a chance to nail Hawpe at the plate. 1-1.
UPDATE 12:30 (BOTTOM OF FIRST): It was amusing to watch Griffey lumber in on Helton’s foul popup, while Beltre, covering twice as much territory, sprinted back to make the nice catch.
A couple of tidbits; One, reliever Shawn Kelley threw a 25-pitch bullpen session before the game and was bubbling with excitement afterward. He has been on the DL since May 6 with a strained oblique. This was his first time on the mound since then. He’ll try it again Tuesday (“I’ll get a little more violent,” he said). The good news was no pain, no restrictions.
“It’s pretty big,” he said. “If today didn’t go good, or if had soreness or tightness or some problems, I would not be ready to make my next step, which is start my real rehab. Since my side held out today, now I can start to get my feel back and get my arm going. Hopefully, we can sit down in the next couple of days and put together a program and and timetable for when I do my rehab (assignment).”
Don Wakamatsu noted that he has a bullpen chart in which each pitcher’s name is followed by a number that tells him how many days it’s been since he’s been used. Kelley took the card and wrote “37” after his name.
One other thing: Turns out that Mark Lowe was feeling sick yesterday (and still is today). He has the ever-popular flu-like symptoms, including a bad sore throat. But he wasn’t using that as an excuse for his rough inning.
And one other thing: Shannon Drayer, sitting to my right, just read on the wire that the Atlanta Braves have purchased the contract of John Halama from the Maryland Blue Crabs. Huh.
Oh, yes: Rockies starter Jason Hammel attended South Kitsap High School in Port Orchard, otherwise known as the House of Learning That Willie Bloomquist Built.
