Mariners can’t throw strikes in late innings, fail to notch first ever sweep in Boston

The reality is that this was arguably the worst game the Mariners played here all weekend, yet they still had a shot at winning with three innings to go. But the bullpen could not throw strikes, gave up five runs and turned a one-run lead into an 8-4 defeat.

Seattle scored all of its runs on some lucky bounces in the fourth and fifth innings, then failed to notch another hit after that. The last Mariners hit that made it out of the infield was the Ronny Cedeno triple blooped down the right field line in the fourth inning.
You need more offense than that to win games at Fenway Park. Especially when the Red Sox hit three home runs. A few more long balls from Seattle’s big power bats might have been welcome in this series.
The Mariners were full value for their 5-4 record on this road trip. They came oh-so-close to making it 6-3 before the bullpen forgot how to throw strikes.
