Brandon Morrow gave up a pair of home runs over five innings of work, but it was a two-run bomb into the upper deck in left by Nelson Cruz off Shawn Kelley in the eighth that proved the difference. That blast made it a 6-2 game and enabled the Rangers to withstand a Seattle rally in the bottom of the frame.
The Mariners scored twice after a single by Jose Lopez and a double from Ken Griffey Jr. — the 515th of his career, tying him for 38th on baseball’s all-time list. Griffey would finish the night with three hits and two runs scored.
A grounder to the right side by Franklin Gutierrez got Lopez home and then a Kenji Johjima double brought Griffey in, But pinch-hitter Chris Shelton, in his first Seattle at-bat, grounded out to the shortstop to end the inning.
The Mariners then went quietly in the ninth.
Bottom line? This team will have to start doing something before the eighth inning to have a shot at winning this series
