Seattle Mariners send Brandon Morrow to Class AAA

Today’s Brandon Morrow news obviously has Ken Griffey Jr. and Ichiro, in the photo above, in stitches. Morrow is indeed headed back to Class AAA to clear room for incoming third baseman Jack Hannahan, who is in the lineup batting eighth tonight. Hannahan’s plane touched down about 4 p.m. and he’s on his way to the park, unless he used that airline whose name I shall not mention and they lost his luggage or something. (Actually. I posted a photo of him on the opposite page, taken at 5:20 p.m. after his arrival).
Anyhow, Morrow is gone for a bit and it might be a while longer than that.

The Mariners want to see some progress out of Morrow and his comments last night in relation to not throwing any curveballs because Kenji Johjima failed to call for any did not serve him well.
Click here to listen to those.
“None were called and I didn’t shake to it at all,” Morrow said.
Mariners manager Don Wakamatsu was disappointed by the comments because he’s preached since spring training that he wants his pitchers to be determined about what they throw and to take charge and make some decisions if they feel the game plan is getting away from them.
Morrow as of yesterday was slotted to throw the first game after the All-Star Break.
Now, that job will go to Garrett Olson. The team has an off-day on July 20, so it won’t need a fifth starter until at least July 25 against the Indians.
Wakamatsu tried to downplay the demotion, saying it was sort of like what the team is doing with Jason Vargas for now. But it’s hard to imagine last night’s performance didn’t seal Morrow’s fate a little. Had he thrown seven shutout innings, I doubt he’d be going down.
Looks like the Mariners will give Jarrod Washburn the best defensive allignment possible tonight.
The lineups:
