Mariners blog

Daily coverage of the Mariners during the season and all year long.

July 16, 2009 at 4:01 PM

Game thread, Mariners vs. Indians, July 16

UPDATE 5:51 P.M. (BOTTOM OF FIFTH): What a sloppy game by the Mariners. Another unearned run for Cleveland. That’s seven Cleveland hits, two Mariners errors, four walks and two wild pitches if you’re scoring at home.
UPDATE 5:35 P.M. (TOP OF FIFTH): The .168 hitter, Ronny Cedeno, kick-starts the Mariners with a home run to right. 3-1.
UPDATE 5:28 P.M. (BOTTOM OF FOURTH): Finally, a clean 1-2-3 inning by a Mariners’ pitcher, as Jakubauskas restores some order. But can the Mariners score off Lee — last year’s All-Star Game starter and Cy Young award winner? 3-0 Indians.
UPDATE 5:22 P.M.: (TOP OF THE FOURTH): Griffey tried to beat the shift by dropping a bunt down the third-base line. Nice thought, but he’s got to get it past the pitcher. Lee field it and threw out Griffey pretty easily. They wasted a one-out double by Gutierrez. Someone needs to tell the Mariners the All-Star break is over.
UPDATE 5:16 P.M.: Olson threw 34 strikes and 35 balls. I’m not pitching coach, but I don’t think that’s good.
UPDATE 5:08 P.M. (BOTTOM OF THIRD): That’s it for Olson. Jakubauskas is coming in after Olson walks Travis Hafner. He was bailed out, again, by Johjima, who threw out Choo trying to steal. Choo had been 13-for-13 in steal attempts this season. Olson struggled virtually from the first pitch.
UPDATE 5 P.M. (TOP OF THIRD): That inning fizzled thanks to a great catch by Grady Sizemore at the center-field wall to rob Ronny Cedeno of extra bases. Cliff Lee is pitching a two-hour game, and Garrett Olson is pitching a four-hour game, so it should last about three hours.
UPDATE 4:51 P.M.: (BOTTOM OF SECOND): Olson is a real mess tonight. Of course, he wasn’t helped by that Branyan error. Apparently, he lost Chris Woodward’s throw in the sun. He immediately went and got a pair of sun glasses — a little too late. One of the Indians runs was earned, one unearned. Chris Jakubauskas was already warming up. Olson has thrown 53 pitches in two innings. 3-0 Indians.
UPDATE 4:30 p.m.: Not a real crisp inning for Garrett Olson — 25 pitches — but it could have been much worse. The key to the inning, obviously, was Asrubal Cabrera getting thrown out trying to steal third for the second out. Yes, the same Asdrubal Cabrera traded for Eduardo Perez, shortly after Shin-Soo Choo was traded for Ben Broussard Ouch, and ouch. .
A belated happy 10th birthday to Safeco Field (July 15), and an on-time happy 10th birthday to my son, Jordan Stone, who was the reason I wasn’t at Safeco Field for Opening Night.
