UPDATE 5:58 P.M. (bottom of seventh); The Indians finally scored on a two-out single by Jamie Carroll, though the replay showed that Gutierrez’s throw to Rob Johnson was in time to nail Victor Martinez running from second. Wakamatsu argued, to Noah Vail. The manager then removed Washburn for Sean White. I just saw the replay again — he was out. 3-1 Mariners.
UPDATE 5:26 P.M. (top of sixth): You won’t see much better center field play than in this series, with Grady Sizemore, who just robbed Jack Hannahan, and Gutierrez. 3-0 Mariners.
UPDATE 5:18 P.M. (BOTTOM OF FIFTH): Washburn is pitching another gem He has given up one run (1) and eight hits in his last 21 innings over three starts
UPDATE 5:06 P.M. (BOTTOM OF FOURTH): Remember when I said it was a beautiful day? Well, the clouds have rolled in, the temperature has dropped, and it looks like a threat of rain. But nothing yet. Washburn is certainly using the whole park — lots of long flies for outs. And he won a duel with Choo, striking him out after four two-strike fouls. 2-0 Mariners.
UPDATE 4:55 P.M. (TOP OF FOURTH): A two-run homer for Gutierrez off Ohka — the 10th homer Ohka has given up this year in 35 1/3 innings. As for Frankie Ballgame, he has the third-best average in the AL (.376) since June 18. 2-0 Mariners,
UPDATE 4:40 P.M. (TOP OF THIRD): The Mariners apparently didn’t get the memo on Ohka’s statistics. They’re scoreless through three, leaving two men in scoring position so far. Jarrod Washburn is going to get a complex, if he doesn’t have one already.
UPDATE 4:15 P.M. (BOTTOM OF FIRST): An awesome catch by Gutierrez to bail out Washburn. He had his back against the wall at the 400-foot sign, did a little leap, and hauled in Asdrubal Cabrera’s drive. 0-0.
Let’s see if the Mariners can tee off against Tomo Ohka like everyone else has seemed to do this year. Some of you might even remember that Ohka was with Tacoma for a bit last year. It wasn’t pretty.
