Rowland-Smith outduels Halladay

It’s not very often that a back-end starter outduels a guy like Roy Halladay. But it’s not very often that a back-end starter has the kind of start that Ryan Rowland-Smith had today. He threw 7 innings and allowed two runs, three hits and no walks. He also took a no-hitter into the seventh inning.
“I was joking with myself, saying, ‘I guess this is what you have to do to beat this guy,’ ” Rowland-Smith said after the game.
Rowland-Smith was great and made only one big mistake, a hanging slider that Adam Lind absolutely crushed to center field in the 7th. But Rowland-Smith showed something by getting out of that inning.
Manager Don Wakamatsu had this to say: “He pitched as good as I’ve ever seen him pitch. He was aggressive, threw strikes and kept the ball in the zone.”
With the rotation in such uncertain flux, it would be nice for the Mariners to know they will get a quality start out of Rowland-Smith every five days, especially as Eric Bedard once again sits on the DL.
Some other notes from today:
-Ken Griffey Jr,’s go-ahead double in the 7th gave him his 177th game with at least two extra-base hits. That’s tied for fifth with Manny Ramirez and only these four guys have more (bold for PEDs): Sammy Sosa (182), Willie Mays (200), Hank Aaron (203), and Barry Bonds (246).
-Ichiro now has a 21-game hit streak (he is .478 in the streak) and a pretty impressive five straight multi-hit games. His league-leading average is up to .368.
-Jose Lopez went 3-for-4 and achieved one of my least favorite sayings in baseball: he was a triple away from the cycle (which is like being a stroke away from a hole-in-one; the triple is the hardest part). He has 24 doubles, good for most on the M’s.
