Wilson may arrive in time for today’s game — or not

Jack Wilson is trying to get to Seattle from San Francisco, where the Pirates played last night. Don Wakamatsu just said, “The latest I’ve heard is he’ll land at 2:30 p.m., and head straight to the ballpark at that point. Hopefully, he’ll be available.”
The game starts at 1:40, so he might arrive in time for the later innings. The Mariners will have someone at the airport to pick him up and rush him to Safeco.
Wakamatsu added that Wilson’s plane has already been delayed once. Welcome to our world, Jack.
Ian Snell is likely to go to Tacoma at first, but it’s clear the Mariners envision him being in their rotation soon.
I’ll have much more in a bit, but I’ve got to sift through a lot tape and info first. My snap judgment on the deal: It has the potential to haunt the Mariners — Clement could emerge as a big-time bat, and you never know about young pitchers — but it solidifies a problem area, shortstop, for probably at least next year, while Snell has the potential to mature into a quality starter. Mostly, it signals to me that the Mariners still haven’t given up on this season. What they do, or don’t do, with Jarrod Washburn will send an even stronger message in that regard.
One other thing: the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is reporting that the Pirates put up a “significant” amount of cash in the deal, which would be a plus in the Mariners’ favor.
