UPDATE 1:01 p.m.: A reminder, it can take several minutes after the deadline for word of completed trades to trickle down.
Some of you may have already heard, but the Boston Red Sox have completed that trade with the Cleveland Indians to land catcher Victor Martinez. The Red Sox are in the wild-card lead and “going for it” in 2009. That’s the kind of move a team trying to win this year makes.
The Red Sox sent the Indians RH reliever Justin Masterson, their sandwich round pick from last year, Bryan Price and LHP Nick Hagadone, the top-ranked southpaw in their system. That’s a steep price. But it’s one teams pay when they try for a championship.

Another team going for it this year, the Minnesota Twins, just acquired shortstop Orlando Cabrera and cash from the Oakland A’s for top infield prospect Tyler Landendorf, 21. Again, a steep price, but they got what they wanted.
As for the Mariners, they may or may not be done dealing. The Los Angeles Dodgers are still looking for bullpen help. Remember, it can sometimes take up to a half hour for deals to be announced after the 1 p.m. PDT deadline officially passes.
We’re told that Luke French will arrive here about an hour before Seattle plays the Rangers tonight. Jarrod Washburn is expected to get here shortly to gather his things.
