Mariners sign first-rounder Nick Franklin

When Nick Franklin was at Safeco Field yesterday and scheduled to take his physical, it was pretty obvious he was in the fold. And now comes word via Baseball America that Franklin, the Mariners’ second pick in the first round of the June draft (No. 27 overall), has been signed for a $1.28 million bonus. (NOTE: The Mariners have confirmed that Franklin agreed to terms. He is in uniform right now and will take batting practice with the team. I’ll have some quotes from scouting director Tom McNamara shortly).
The reported bonus figure is an interesting number, because it’s over MLB’s slot recommendation of $1,161,000 for that spot in the draft. The Mariners are not known for going over slot, but they’ll have to, big-time, if they want to ink their big fish, Dustin Ackley, the No. 2 overall pick, by Monday’s deadline.
Franklin is a switch-hitting high school shortstop from Altamonte Springs, Fla.
