GM Jack Zduriencik to speak at 9:15 p.m.

Just got off a plane to Detroit and am in a cab with MLB.com writer Jim Street and a Japanese writer as we speed off to the downtown area. I am hoping to get on the conference call with GM Jack Zduriencik. It’s raining here and much will depend on whether the cab gets there in time. But I will update.
Much was made today about the report that No. 2 overall pick Dustin Ackley went to California to take a physical. But I would not read too much into that. Fact is, Ackley had to have a physical done today. The way these negotiations are going — down to the wire — there would have been no time for the Mariners to ink a late deal and then get a physical done. You can’t pay a guy millions without a physical. So, that part was routine and in no way an indication of whether he’d sign or not.
Frankly, I’d be stunned — absolutely blown away — if Ackley does not sign. But I’ve been surprised before in this game. No announcement yet.
