The sun has started to break out again here in Detroit. It’s been in and out of clouds on a hot and very muggy day. Carlos Silva is throwing a bullpen session as we speak. I can see him off in the far distance out beyond the wall in left center.
Anyhow, as the headline of the post says, the Mariners do not have shortstop Jack Wilson or left fielder Michael Saunders in tonight’s starting lineup. In fact, Wilson now says he’ll probably be out until Friday.
“I could play right now if i had to,” Wilson told me moments ago. “But the team doesn’t want me out there playing if something could happen. They don’t want to take that chance if they really don’t have to.”

In other words, this isn’t the World Series. Wilson can’t say it, but the M’s are toast in the playoff race and don’t want to risk aggravating what’s been a nagging injury for Wilson most of the past month.
Instead, the M’s will go with Ryan Langerhans in left field and with Josh Wilson at shortstop.
The Mariners had hoped to have both Saunders and Jack Wilson back by today.
Wilson first hurt his hamstring while with the Pirates towards the final week or so of July.
“It was right before the trade deadline, so they wanted me out there playing,” Wilson said. “And so, I’ve more or less played through it ever since.”
Wilson sat out only three days that last time before playing again. This time, he’s being more cautious. Becasue the muscle is injured right at the top of the hamstring, he has trouble sitting down without aggravating it.
‘I literally have to sit right at the edge of the chair,” he said. “Yesterday, when we flew in here, I was right on the edge of my seat in the plane the whole way.”
