All eyes on Ichiro

Ichiro is doing some heavy-duty running right now under the watchful eye of, among others, Don Wakamatsu, trainer Rick Griffin, numerous Japanese media, and Angels manager Mike Scioscia, who is standing in front of the Angels dugout taking it all in.
Ichiro, of course, has missed seven games with a tight calf. I’m sure he really wants to play tonight against the Angels, but Wakamatsu has been clear that he’s not going to risk a serious injury. Ichiro ran in the outfield, then went to first base and tried out some quick bursts off the bag. He just finished and went inside.
Will he play tonight? We’ll find out, but my hunch is he will. Meanwhile, Dustin Ackley will hold a press conference in moments, and then take BP with the Mariners in the final group. That should be fun. I’m sure Ken Griffey will give him the full razzing treatment.
