Oakland Athletics at Seattle Mariners: 10/01 game thread

The Mariners scored three in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead, with Mike Sweeney bringing home a pair on a line drive single to center and then Adrian Beltre notching another with a single to left. All three runs came with two out and were unearned after an error by third baseman Adam Kennedy opened the floodgates.
By the way, we’ll be handing out the local BBWAA awards to Mariners players prior to tomorrow’s game — not Saturday as I first wrote earlier this week. Getting my days mixed up as a long season winds down.

8:17 p.m.: We’re all tied up 1-1 here in the fifth after a leadoff triple by Kurt Suzuki in the fourth helped even things up. Left fielder Bill Hall just missed catching the ball as it struck the left field wall. Hall then took his time getting to the ball — his sore quad muscle still appearing to be an issue — and Suzuki made it to third. A double by Daric Barton brought the run home.
7:36 p.m.: Adrian Beltre just parked the first pitch of the bottom of the second inning over the center field wall to make it 1-0 for the Mariners.
There have been a whole lot of baserunners for both teams up to now, two by Seattle in the first inning and three for the A’s in their first two turns at-bat. Doug Fister helped thwart a first-inning rally by doing the splits to complete a 3-6-1 double play. Ouch. Must have done some gymnastics as a kid.
7:33 p.m.: Ah, nothing like a little October baseball. The Mariners tonight will attempt to repeat what they did last year: sweep the A’s at home in the final meeting of the season between these teams. The reprecussions of that will be a bit less severe this time. If the Mariners win, they’ll equal their highest win total and winning percentage against the A’s in club history, when they went 14-5 in 2007.
