Lopez at third base, Lee taking fielding practice and Bradley getting cuts in

Taking a break here from the morning workouts, where the Mariners had Jose Lopez at third base and Chone Figgins at second in an early drill. We talked about this on Geoff Baker Live! last week. The Mariners are going to use spring training to get a look at Lopez at third and Figgins at second. Will it continue? I don’t expect it to, but we’ll get that confirmed by the team once the workout is done. The Mariners like to have flexibility and the way you get that is by working guys out at different positions. But there’s a huge difference between doing it in a spring training drill and carrying it over into a game.

Cliff Lee was out there on the mound with other pitchers doing a pickoff and bunt coverage drill this morning. It’s Lee’s first bit of PFP since he had surgery on his foot 18 days ago. Lee looked OK in handling the drill.

Ken Griffey Jr. and Milton Bradley (the latter, in the photo above) were out there taking cuts in the batting cage as well. Both looked a little rusty at times, fouling off several pitches. But they also had some shots to center. Ichiro and Rob Johnson were in their group as well.

We’ll discuss all this and more on Geoff Baker Live! coming up at 6 p.m. Pacific time. Last night’s show drew our biggest audience of the spring. Let’s keep it going.
