Mike Sweeney a late scratch at first base

mari0626 015.JPG
You can see Mike Sweeney warming up down on the field prior to this afternoon’s game. If you think he has a bit of a pained expression, you might be on to something. Sweeney was slated to start a second game in a row at first base, but was scratched just moments ago. Josh Wilson, who was to have started at shortstop, moves over to first base, while Jack Wilson goes in at shortstop instead of riding the bench.
The Mariners have Doug Fister on a pitch count limit of 75 to 80 today and that could spell bullpen trouble if he can’t get at least five or six innings in.

David Aardsma is with his wife awaiting the birth of their child, meaning Brandon League is now the de facto closer.
But with Shawn Kelley and Mark Lowe both on the DL, getting to League could be the biggest problem. Garrett Olson looks like he’ll be one of the arms in there, though he’d be working a third straight day.
The long guy is Brian Sweeney, but it will be tricky to decide exactly when to bring him in. Don’t forget, Fister hasn’t pitched in a while. If he gets in early trouble, he might have trouble getting out of it because of rust.
If the bullpen gets burned today, the team would likely have to bring somebody up for tomorrow’s finale.
