Felix Hernandez has been bailed out on many an occasion by the bat of countryman Jose Lopez and tonight was no exception.
Lopez stepped up in the eighth inning and lined a grand slam into the left field bullpen off Joba Chamberlian to turn a 1-0 deficit into a three-run lead. Hernandez took over from there, going the distance for the victory in a gutsy, 126-pitch effort. There were two on in that ninth and you can bet Don Wakamatsu was happy Hernnadez didn’t walk the bases full andforce the manager to lift him. His pitch count was at the limit when he got the game-ending whiff.
Seattle had scored just two runs the first 25 innings of this series before Lopez came through.
Justin Smoak went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts and a groundout. Lopez, usually the out-maker, gets the only hit that mattered tonight.
