A factual correction on today’s Ichiro post

One of the things I wrote about Ichiro this morning wasn’t accurate and I wanted to clarify it here in a separate post rather than just on the one below.
Any money that is made overseas in Japan — or any other country — on sales of team merchandise goes to MLB International. It is then distributed equally amongst the 30 teams.
So, there is no advantange to keeping Ichiro, or any foreign player here in Seattle in the hopes of selling their merchandise in other countries.
Where Ichiro would benefit the team is in ticket sales to fans from other countries who do come here in big numbers to see Ichiro and the Mariners play. How much money is derived from that remains a mystery.
But the merchandise end of it, at least outside the U.S., would not be a factor.
Hopefully, this clears that up.
