Boston Red Sox at Mariners: July 24, 2010 game thread

Final: Mariners 5, Red Sox 1
9:41 p.m.: The Mariners pick up three insurance runs in the eighth and lead 5-1. It looked like Justin Smoak might belt a grand slam with two outs, but his fly ball to right field came down just short of the wall.
9:24 p.m.: The Mariners have two hits. Milton Bradley leads off the eighth with a triple.
9:06 p.m.: I’m having some technical difficulties with our blog program. I think the computer ate my last two updates. Anyway, after Michael Saunders’ two-run shot the Mariners are up 2-1 in the eighth. Will one hit be enough?
8:29 p.m.: Lester continues to power through the Mariners’ lineup. He’s up to nine strikeouts through five innings and has a perfect game working.
Chris Seddon is up in the bullpen for the Mariners, as Pauley works closer to the 100-pitch mark.

8:13 p.m.: Lester just struck out the side. He’s now got eight strikeouts through four innings. He’s thrown 54 pitches. Pauley has thrown 72 pitches through four and has given up one run on four hits.
7:55 p.m.: David Ortiz got all of that one, sending the ball out of the park to right-center field.
7:52 p.m.: Both Pauley and Lester are pitching well so far. Through three innings Boston’s J.D. Drew has the only hit of the game. Lester has five strikeouts and Pauley has four.

7:35 p.m.:
Pauley gets out of a bit of a jam in the second. The Red Sox had runners on second and third with one out after a wild pitch, but Pauley was able to get out of the inning unscathed.
7:20 p.m.: A few boos for Chone Figgins when he stepped to bat in the bottom of the first, but most people in the stands didn’t seem to care or notice.
7:16 p.m.: David Pauley retires the Red Sox in order in the first, ending the inning by striking out David Ortiz.
7:06 p.m.: Former Seahawks running back Curt Warner just threw out the first pitch.
7:00 p.m.: It’s a nice night at the ballpark. The Mariners, who are 2-7 since the All-Star break, are taking on the Red Sox and starter Jon Lester (11-4, 2.81 ERA).
Seattle is starting David Pauley (0-2, 2.40 ERA) in the third game of this four-game series.
It should be interesting to see how the Mariners open up tonight’s game after last night’s altercation in the dugout.
