Felix Hernandez shut down for season

Jack Zduriencik just held a dugout press briefing to announce that Felix Hernandez won’t make his scheduled start Sunday. He’s done for the season. Zduriencik said it was precautionary, mainly because of Hernandez’s mounting innings — 249 2/3 this year on top of 238 2/3 last year.
“It’s tough, because you know how competitive he is,” Zduriencik said. “He wants to pitch. He’s earned a right to pitch, but I asked him to respect our decision. He has to understand it’s in his long-term best interests and the organization’s best interests.
“The chances of anything happening are minimal. We realize that. He’s been so phenomenal the last two years. But when you look at the innings last year, the innings this year, and realize he’s No. 1 in innings pitched…By not pitching Sunday, he’ll still be No. 1 in the league. It’s a decision in his long-term best interest, and that’s at the forefront here.”
Zduriencik added that he believes Hernandez should be the hands-down Cy Young Award winner even without the Sunday start..
I’ll have a lot more later, but right now I have to transcribe some tape.
