Casey Kotchman says goodbye; coaching staff to be announced today

The Casey Kotchman era came to an abrupt and inglorious end today when the first baseman refused an outright assignment to Class AAA Tacoma and opted for free agency. Seattle has been clearing room on its 40-man roster the past two days and Kotchman — who was arbitration eligible — was not about to be kept on it after producing a disappointing .217 average and .616 on-base-plus-slugging percentage (OPS) at first base last season.
Seattle traded utility man Bill Hall for Kotchman and then watched the former go on to hit .247 with 18 homers and a .772 OPS for Boston.
As of today, the 40-man roster sits at 29. Yes, there is some real housecleaning taking place here.
By the way, the M’s expect to announce the remainder of their coaching staff today.
