Mariners draft pick James Paxton in Seattle for physical tomorrow ahead of signing deal

There has been a lot of buzz in the blogosphere the past few days about Mariners draft pick James Paxton, a left-handed starter taken by Seattle in the fourth round last June. Paxton, from British Columbia, was initially taken by Toronto as the 37th overall pick back in 2009 before deciding to hold out another year.
The rumor was that Paxton was close to signing with Seattle. Well, my sources now tell me a deal has been hammered out and that Paxton will be in Seattle tomorrow for a physical. All that remains once he passes is to put his name on a contract.
Now, we’ll get to see just what kind of pitcher he still is.
Paxton threw only 17 2/3 innings in 2010, for an independent league team. The Mariners could very well have a supplemental round pick on their hands for the cost of a fourth-rounder. Or, they might have a long road of work ahead of them. But we’ll see. If it works out, this would be one of the team’s best pitching prospects outside of Michael Pineda.
