Mariners at Chicago White Sox: March 3, 2011 game thread

That’s Felix Hernandez throwing a simulated game of 33 pitches this morning. A couple of guys made some contact, but Hernandez assured everyone he’s ready to go.
He makes his spring training debut next Tuesday. I asked Hernandez about the difference between having hitters actually swing off him versus throwing live BP in which they track pitches.
“The adrenaline goes up a little bit and you want to strike out everybody,” said Hernandez, who had four strikeouts.
Hernandez says he feels ready now. Maybe more ready than at this time a year ago. I asked how he could tell when his stuff is ready.
“I was throwing strikes,” he said. “The breaking ball was good. Change-up was all right. Sometimes it cut. Sometimes it dropped down. Everything looked good.”
Five-time Cy Young Award winner Randy Johnson dropped by camp this morning, and he and Hernandez had a chance to speak.
“He told me I need to win four more Cy Youngs,” Hernandez said. “And he said ‘You need 4,000 more strikeouts just to catch me.’ ”
How did Hernandez respond to that?
“I said ‘I’ll be there.”
