Garrett Olson claimed by the Pittsburgh Pirates

This one ranks as somewhat of a surprise, though not entirely. Garrett Olson was going to be taken off the 40-man roster by the Mariners at some point. But they had to get him through waivers first.
That didn’t happen, as the Pittsburgh Pirates claimed him this morning.
The season is still two weeks away, so there was always a chance that some team in need would take a flyer on a lefty pitcher.
But it wasn’t much of a surprise that the M’s went this route. With Aaron Laffey in camp, Olson’s non-performance pretty much guaranteed his days on the 40-man roster were going to be limited. The M’s will need to add a bunch of non-roster guys and need the room.

Better to lose Olson at this point than some promising young arm or position player. Olson was never going to be a starting pitcher for this team on a full-time basis.
He was strictly relief fodder and really better at the long stuff than situational specialist opportunities.
Next to go? Well, I’d say pitcher Jose Flores, a Rule 5 draft pick, is living on borrowed time here.
