Mariners return Rule 5 selection Jose Flores to Indians

Not much of a shocker here. The Mariners have returned Rule 5 draft pick Jose Flores, 21, to the Cleveland Indians. In the photo above, you see Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik chatting at the winter meetings right after having picked Flores.
We’ve been writing for a week that, with five non-roster players needing to be added to the Opening Day squad, there was no longer room on the 40-man roster for a Class A pitcher who would have had to remain with the M’s all season. In fact, if you watched Geoff Baker Live! yesterday, a viewer asked me which 40-man player I could definitely see not being on the squad come April 1. My answer? Mr. Flores. Actually, my answer was “Jose Castro” which was an amalgamation of Flores and Juan Castro. A viewer quickly corrected me, so we got the name right. But you get the gist. A no-brainer decision.

Flores had to pass through waivers before being returned, which he did.
The current 40-man roster now stands at 38. That means the M’s will have to trim it by three more spots come next Thursday.
That way, they can get the non-roster guys — expected to be Ryan Langerhans, Adam Kennedy, Jamey Wright, Chris Ray and Royce Ring — on the squad. I say “expected to be” because the Franklin Gutierrez DL probability might impact how the roster is shaped.
