Pre-game notes and lineup

Bob Condotta filling in for Geoff Baker here tonight, and back up from the pre-game media availability.
The news is that reliever Shawn Kelley threw a 20-pitch simulated game and said later that he “felt good” and is ready for another simulated game on Sunday and then maybe beginning a rehab stint next week.
Kelley is attempting to return from Tommy John surgery last Sept. 1.
Manager Eric Wedge agreed that Kelley “really looked good today” and that it was “big to get out on the mound and face hitters.” Kelley said he threw a mix of fastballs (12 or so), sliders and changeups and all felt good. “He looked free and easy,” Wedge said. “The ball was coming out of his hand good.” Kelley said he might need 5-6 rehab appearances — a “mini-spring training,” he called it — so he could still be a month or so from returning, which would be right on the June 1 date that was originally speculated.
David Aardsma also met with reporters to talk about his slight setback, being shut down for a few days of his rehab stint due to tightness in his forearm. Aardsma says he considers it a temporary setback and that the team is simply having him “take a little time and don’t let it become something bigger.” Aardsma is returning from off-season hip surgery and says the hip feels fine. Aardsma had three rehab appearances, all in what turned out to be cold weather, and that may have been a factor (and Wedge said they will take that into consideration as they figure out where to next send Aardsma and Kelley).
If/when both return, a Mariner bullpen that has been strength of late will be that much better. An obvious question is what to do with Aardsma once he returns, but he said he’s not worrrying about that now and that “I have to show I can take a role back in the bullpen.”
There was also lots of talk about this being Michael Pineda’s first game this year against a team he has faced before.
Wedge said that’s a definite issue — he said baseball is a game of constant adjustments and Texas definitely may change its approach this time — though he also wants to make sure it’s not something Pineda is worrying much about ahead time.
“What we don’t need to do is worry about that until it happens,” he said.
