Don’t look now, but those wacky Mariners just won another series

That’s three consecutive series wins by the Mariners against clubs expected to contend for the playoffs this year. Jason Vargas went a season-best 7 2/3 innings, allowing just one run, while Brandon League closed out his ninth save in as many tries.
So, a 3-1 win by the M’s, who take two of three from the Texas Rangers. Make that the second-place Rangers, who fell a game behind the Angels. Texas is now just two games up on the Mariners.
Seattle’s offense is still a mystery. The M’s have averaged just three runs per game over their last six contests. But they’ve won four of them. The pitching has been that good.

Justin Smoak was a beast on offense again tonight, collecting three more hits with a home run, a very long double and a single in the eighth.
Colby Lewis was very good for the Rangers, matching his career high with 10 strikeouts in the complete-game loss. But he wasn’t good enough.
