Felix Hernandez rocked early, offense AWOL in first series loss in seven tries for Mariners

This streak of six series wins in a row by the Mariners was bound to end and there was no more deserving a time than right here. Seattle has not found any offense this series and was done the minute Felix Hernandez gave up a four-spot in the third.
Yeah, that’s not typical Hernandez. But this 5-1 loss was a 5-0 game after three innings. The Mariners still had time to get back in it and started to with a run in the fourth.

But there were too many routine ground balls after that. The top of the order — primarily Ichiro but also Justin Smoak — did not get it done tonight.
With Smoak, he’s still developing and going through a rough patch as the No. 3 hitter.
With Ichiro, we’ve discussed this at length. I’m not going to keep repeating myself. Too many routine outs by him tonight.
Chone Figgins? Got the one hit and then threw away an error that prevented Hernandez from a seven-inning start.
These problems aren’t terminal. But there needs to be more of a catalyst dynamic at work from the top three guys in the order or this team is going to struggle the rest of the season. You can’t keep relying on your bottom three or four guys to carry a team.
