Chone Figgins, Jack Cust sitting out tonight’s Mariners game

Just arrived here in Detroit after a day of flight delays following heavy rain in Chicago. The Mariners will have an interesting lineup tonight, minus Chone Figgins, Jack Cust and Justin Smoak.
This is Cust’s second game missed and he’s not hurt. That’s a message sent right there by manager Eric Wedge to a DH with just two home runs since the season began. Cust does have an OPS greater than .800 going on the past six weeks, but we’ve mentioned before that he is getting paid to hit a few dingers as well.
So, the message would have to be for the home runs.
I’d expect to see him back in tomorrow. You don’t want him to rust on the bench if the idea is to get him going.
Smoak? A one-day rest. Nothing to get overly concerned about. He had a hit last night, but had been struggling.
Figgins? Now there’s an intertesting story.
This might not be just a one-day thing. Not that it’s about to be a permanent benching because, we’ve told you before, the team can’t afford to go down that road yet because of his contract.
But the days of Figgins as a six-or-seven-day-per-week player may be over unless he starts hitting again.
I asked Wedge whether Figgins would be back in there tomorrow.
“With Figgins, I’m not pre-determining anything right now,” Wedge said.
“You know what I mean? I wanted to get (Luis) Rodriguez in there. He had a decent game against them the last time. Obviously, Figgy’s been struggling, so, you pull him back a little bit and try to get going, you know? We’ve got to get these guys going. I mean, hell man, that’s the bottom line. I’m not surprising anybody with anything because I’ve had the conversations with them and they know what they need to do.”
Those conversations have been to tell players what they can expect as far as playing time goes.
“Those veteran guys, if we’re going to do this (make the playoffs), those guys have got to get going,” he said.
