Pre-game notes — Peguero batting cleanup

Bob Condotta filling in tonight for Geoff Baker as the Mariners attempt to avoid the sweep at the hands of the Angels.
They’ll do so with a new look at the cleanup spot as Carlos Peguero gets the call there tonight.
“We’ve got to keep searching to try to find something that works for us offensively,” said manager Eric Wedge. “We’ve got these young kids up here that are right in the middle of it. He’s a threat everytime he walks up there. Just looking for him to continue to hit the ball hard and let the results take care of themselves. (Mike) Carp swung the bat well last night and we’ve got him in the middle there (at six) along with (Miguel Olivo at five), so we’ll keep searching. We are not going to be afraid to try anything.”
Wedge said he’s not worried about Peguero trying too hard at the cleanup spot.
“I’m not going to worry about it,” he said. “I’m past worrying about much of anything when it comes to what we are trying to do offensively. I’m more focused on being more aggressive and not being afraid to take chances and just really curious about finding out what people are capable of doing. I think that when you talk about what we are capable of doing and what we are doing offensively, it is two different things. We need to keep working to try to find a combination that works and keep working to get these guys going and so we will find out who is going to really be in the mix as we move forward.”
Of Peguero, Wedge said: “He’s shown the ability to drive the ball and be aggressive and be ready to hit.”
Carp is also again in left field and Wedge said that’s a nod to the fact that Carp handled those duties well last night so “let’s give him another shot to do it tonight.”
Wedge said tonight’s game is a big one to avoid a sweep, saying “we need to pick ourselves up here today and win this last one before the day off.”
In maybe the most interesting pre-game sight, Adam Kennedy took some ground balls at third. Both Wedge and Kennedy downplayed it, saying he has been taking balls there at times all season — Kennedy said he typically takes some when he’s not in the lineup, as is the case tonight. But the obvious implication is he could be getting some work in there to prepare for any ramifications of Dustin Ackley’s eventual callup.
Here is the Seattle lineup for tonight:
Ichiro, RF
Brendan Ryan, SS
Justin Smoak, 1B
Carlos Peguero, DH
Miguel Olivo, C
Mike Carp, LF
Franklin Gutierrez, CF
Chone Figgins, 3B
Jack Wilson, 2B
