San Diego Padres at Mariners: July 1, 2011 game thread

Safeco Field July 1.JPG
9:36 p.m.: Mariners 6, Padres 0. Jason Vargas pitches a complete-game shutout.
9:22 p.m.: Jason Vargas has been fantastic tonight. He has blanked the Padres through eight innings, scattering five hits and striking out seven. The Mariners lead, 6-0.
8:58 p.m.: Adam Kennedy delivers again for the Mariners, driving in Brendan Ryan with an RBI double. It’s 6-0 Mariners after six.

8:21 p.m.: Here is an update on Orlando Hudson. He has a shin contusion and is day-to-day. When he fouled that pitch off his leg it looked worse than that.
8:08 p.m.: The Mariners tack on three runs in the third. Jack Cust drew a bases-loaded walk and Carlos Peguero singled up the middle to drive in a pair.
Seattle is up, 4-0, after three.
7:46 p.m.: How about that? Chone Figgins gets the start tonight at third base and makes a fantastic backhand stop on a line drive off Chris Denorfia’s bat to end the top of the third.
Then Figgins leads off the bottom of the inning and reaches on an error.
7:34 p.m.: Vargas has four strikeouts through two innings now (23 pitches, 19 strikes).
San Diego second baseman Orlando Hudson fouled a pitch off his knee and had to be helped off the field with two outs in the second inning. Alberto Gonzalez replaced him at the plate and struck out, ending the inning.
The Mariners lead, 1-0, heading into the bottom of the second.
7:26 p.m.: The Mariners get on the board first. After Ichiro grounded out to third to open the bottom of the first, Brendan Ryan doubled off the wall in left center and Adam Kennedy singled up the middle, driving in Ryan.
7:16 p.m.: Jason Vargas is off to a nice start. He struck out two of the four batters he faced in the first, giving up one base hit, a single up the middle to Chase Headley.

7 p.m.:
It’s ’80s night here at the ballpark. The Mariners will wear throwback uniforms from 1984 and Sir Mix-a-Lot is throwing out the first pitch.
LHP Jason Vargas (5-5, 3.88 ERA) gets the start for Seattle. RHP Dustin Mosely (2-7, 3.03 ERA) will start for San Diego.
After being swept by the Braves, the Mariners have lost eight of 11, while the Padres have won four straight and seven of eight.
