Felix Hernandez, Brandon League named to AL all-star team, but Ichiro out

Hardly a surprise to see Felix Hernandez named to the AL all-star team today. A bit of a good surprise that Brandon League made it, though he’s arguably been the best closer in MLB this year.
Thing is, a lot of this voting and selecting has to do with past performance.
That helped a guy like Derek Jeter make the squad. Unfortunately for Ichiro this year, past performance was not enough. For the first time in his career, he wasn’t named to the team.

Hernandez goes as much for his Cy Young Award last season as anything he’s done this year. And that’s OK, since he hasn’t exactly tanked this season and deserves the honor based on how he overtook the field after last year’s All-Star Game to win the Cy Young going away despite only 13 wins.
League was deserving based on this year’s performance. So was David Pauley. So was Michael Pineda.
But let’s face it. You were never going to see four all-stars from an M’s team that lost 101 games last year and is sub-.500 so far in 2011. Just doesn’t happen that way.
Hernandez and League are good representatives.
