Erik Bedard is to throw a 40-to-45-pitch simulated game here at Fenway Park prior to Seattle’s contest against the Red Sox. After that, according to manager Eric Wedge, Bedard will be ready to pitch in a game once the team gets back from this road trip.
So, that’ll be one abbreviated start prior to the July 31 trade deadline. Probably not enough time to create a market and get a deal done before August. And once that happens, he’ll have to clear waivers first.
So, the odds of getting much in return for Bedard are dwindling by the minute.
If Bedard happens to win that simulated game, they still can’t count it as a slump-buster and end Seattle’s losing streak if it reaches 13 after tonight.
Speaking of slump-busters, Dustin Ackley (photo above) is back in the lineup at the No. 3 spot in the batting order. No Chone Figgins or Jack Wilson tonight. Justin Smoak is way down to No. 6 in the batting order.
Mike Carp is in left and Greg Halman in center. So, it’s the “young guys'” turn tonight.
Not at DH, though. Jack Cust is the designated “sitting vet” who actually gets to play tonight.
