Justin Smoak back in at cleanup spot as Mariners try to avoid 14th consecutive loss

Justin Smoak is 9-for-61 (.148) in July and 4-for-23 (.174) the past week. He’s also 0-for-2 in his career versus Josh Beckett.
He’s been a sub-.200 hitter for 2 1/2 months — his average dropping 90 points from .315 down to .225 since May 6. He’s a .766 OPS versus southpaws and a .697 OPS against right handers like Beckett. Well, actually, most of them haven’t been as good as Beckett.
But Smoak has one single in each of the last two games. And for now, for these Mariners, that’s good enough to be tonight’s cleanup hitter.
Hey, when you’ve dropped 13 in a row, no lineup should be consistent from night to night.
And fans of BABIP (and really, who isn’t one of those) will note his lowly .188 batting average on balls in play versus a 22.1 percent line drive rate in July means he’s hitting some balls hard and square but…all together now!…right at people.
So, let’s give this a whirl.
Worst the M’s can do is lose again.
Oh yeah, and as for Smoak’s trade counterpart, Blake Beavan…sorry to do this to you kid, this being your first month and all, but, well, history is all riding on you tonight. Good luck.
