Jack Cust DFA’d as Erik Bedard comes off disabled list

The Jack Cust era is over in Seattle. The erstwhile designated hitter, who has ridden the bench for much of the past month, was designated for assignment today to make room for Erik Bedard coming off the 15-day disabled list.
Bedard will start tonight against the Rays. The Mariners have 10 days to trade, release or outright the contract of Cust, 32, who began the year as the every-day DH but didn’t produce. In 67 games, he hit .213 with just three homers, 23 RBIs and a .329 slugging percentage.
Theoretically, Cust could wind up in Tacoma, but it’s just as likely that his brief stay in the organization is finished. Wily Mo Pena is expected to get a look at DH at some point in August.
The Mariners’ 40-man roster is now at 39 players.
