Brendan Ryan goes on DL for Mariners with sprained shoulder

We’re going to have a roster move announced at some point tonight because Luis Rodriguez is making the 3 1/2-hour drive up here to Arlington from Round Rock, Tex. in order to join the Mariners and take Brendan Ryan’s roster spot.
Ryan stayed behind in Anaheim last night and went to see Dr. Lewis Yocum today, where he was diagnosed with a sprained AC joint in his left shoulder. That means at least 10 days to two weeks before he can play again, so Rodriguez is up. The DL move is retroactive to Aug. 4.
The injury occured when Ryan collided with Adam Kennedy last Wednesday while the pair were chasing down a foul pop up.
Rodriguez was already on the 40-man roster so no move will have to be made to clear room.

Jack Wilson is in at shortstop for the team again tonight. Mariners manager Eric Wedge also mentioned that Kyle Seager can play that position in a pinch, but that won’t really be needed once Rodriguez arrives.
Wedge said thatm initially “we were afraid that something might have been torn in there.”
And while a sprain does indeed involve a smaller degree of tearing or fraying, it’s not the same as, say, tearing a labrum or something more serious.
But still, recovery can vary. We might not see Ryan for a bit.
One guy we might see soon in Justin Smoak, who told me his thumb felt better today.
“I hit from the left side today, so we’ll see how it feels and I’ll try to hit from the other side tomorrow,” Smoak said.
I remarked that it’s too bad this had to happen now, just as his team opens a series in one of his favorite launching bad ballparks.
“Tell me about it,” he said.
Wedge said he’ll have to see how Smoak feels tomorrow before deciding on whether to have him hit some more. I’m thinking Smoak might miss the first two games here.
