Casper Wells in Mariners’ lineup, but Ackley isn’t; WIlson placed on DL, Ryan activated

This just in (always wanted to say that): The Mariners have placed shortstop Jack Wilson on the disabled list (retroactive to Thursday) with a severely bruised left heel, and activated shortstop Brendan Ryan from the 15-day DL. Ryan, who has been on the DL since Aug. 8 (retro to Aug. 4) with a sprained AC joint in his left shoulder, will be in uniform tonight.
Wilson hurt himself when he landed awkwardly on first base in the seventh inning of Wednesday’s game against Toronto. He had been hitting .375 (12-for-32) with five doubles over his last nine games. This obviously hurts any chances of the Mariners trading him by the Aug. 31 deadline for postseason eligibility, though on rare occasions trades are made after that.

Also, LHP Aaron Laffey, designated for assignment on Monday to make room on the 40-man roster for Chance Ruffin (not Danny Hultzen, as I wrote previously. They released Chris Ray to make room for Hultzen), has been claimed by the Yankees and will join their bullpen.
Here is Friday’s Mariners lineup for their game against Tampa Bay:
Mariners (53-69)
——————————-
51 Ichiro Suzuki (L) RF
21 Franklin Gutierrez CF
4 Adam Kennedy (L) 3B
20 Mike Carp (L) 1B
33 Casper Wells DH
30 Miguel Olivo C
1 Luis Rodriguez (S) SS
15 Kyle Seager (L) 2B
12 Trayvon Robinson LF
——————————-
34 Felix Hernandez RHP
As you can see, Casper Wells will be DH for the Mariners tonight despite getting hit in the nose by Brandon Morrow on Wednesday. Dustin Ackley is out — not sure yet if it’s related to the cut left hand he suffered on Tuesday when J.P. Arencibia slid into him. Ackley went 0-for-3 with three strikeouts on Wednesday.
It’s an opportunity for Kyle Seager to return to his original position, second base. Adam Kennedy, who played for the Rays’ Triple-A Durham team in 2009 before being traded to Oakland, will start at third base and hit third.
