Mariners manager Eric Wedge cautiously optimistic about what young guys have shown

We’ll have Geoff Baker Live! coming up at 6:10 p.m. PT from FX McRory’s restaurant.
In the photo above, you can see what it looks like when Wily Mo Pena watches somebody else take batting practice. Normally, he’s the center of attention and was again today. He’ll be tonight’s DH against Jake Peavy of the White Sox.
Mariners manager Eric Wedge held court with the media not too long ago and was asked, naturally, about the explosive play of some of his young hitters on the last road trip. But he isn’t celebrating anything too hard just yet.
“You’ve got to see it over time for it to be real,” Wedge said. “Until the league makes an adjustment to you, until you have that level of consistency, until you struggle your you know what off, then pick it back up and find it again and even be that much better, it takes some time for it to be real.”

Wedge has been through this kind of thing before with Cleveland and knows all about the false starts that a rebuilding plan can go through.
“You can’t deny what some of these guys have been doing,” he said. “But it’s 50 at-bats, 80 at-bats, 100 at-bats, 150 at-bats. That’s a lot different than 400 or 500 at-bats or when you’re into your second or third year. But what I like is that they’re doing what they’re supposed to be doing for the most part and they’re getting better. And there’s a certain degree of toughness here that we’re starting to see, which is important too.”
Chone Figgins was out on the field doing some running drills, while Jack Wilson was out there throwing as well.
