The Mariners haven’t announced it yet, but Franklin Gutierrez saw his season end today when he severely strained an oblique muscle in his side while swinging at a pitch in the eighth inning of an 8-5 loss to the Oakland Athletics.
Clearly, this will impact some of the September call-ups the team will bring up.
Casper Wells is day-to-day with a bruised elbow after being hit by a pitch. The elbow is bandaged but he showed me a photo on his iPhone he took of the injury underneath and you can see the stiching of the ball embedded in his skin.
So, I wouldn’t expect him to play tomorrow and that means, at the very least, the team needs to call up another center fielder.
Trayvon Robinson can play center, but then you also need a guy who can play left field every day until Wells is ready to come back. You also need backups at those positions, so I’d expect the team to call up one or both of either Michael Saunders or Greg Halman. Chone Figgins was also activated today and can play the outfield as can Carlos Peguero and Mike Carp.
But it’s center that’s the big issue for now.
Robinson and Wells can both play there for a time, but not seven days a week. So, that’s where the callups come in. You need the backups.
