Mariners take field for intra-squad game

PHOTO: Watch Mariners pitching prospect Taijuan Walker deliver a strikeout pitch to Munenori Kawasaki in the second inning of today’s intra-squad game.
Just chatted with Taijuan Walker in the clubhouse, who told me he wasn’t as nervous on the mound today as he had been in the clubhouse.
“It was my first time facing big leaguers and all, so yeah, I was a little nervous and exited when I got here today,” he said. “But then, when I walked out to the bullpen to warm up, it started going away and I just went out there and pitched.”
Walker has worked a lot on spotting his fastball and it was evident today as he jumped ahead of hitters. He finished Munenori Kawasaki off with that nasty curve ball you see in the video up above and also tried to work in some change-ups to keep the hitters off-balance.
12:51 p.m.: Chone Figgins went on to work his second walk of the game, this time off James Paxton, to start the third inning. Michael Saunders had reached on an error but Paxton got out of the inning with a strikeout on Casper Wells and then a fly out and groundout. Just before the Wells strikeout, Jesus Montero did a nice job of blocking a Paxton pitch in the dirt (photo below).

Brendan Ryan came up to start the fourth and greeted Oliver Perez with a homer to left that ties the game 1-1. Ryan didn’t bother to round the bases, just returned to the dugout.

12:18 p.m.: Great debut for Taijuan Walker, who gets the side 1-2-3 in the bottom of the second. He opened by fanning Munenori Kawasaki on a nasty breaking ball, then got Carlos Peguero to whiff on a pitch up and out of the zone. Guillermo Quiroz grounded out meekly after that. Nice debut for a 19-year-old.
12:04 p.m. — Interesting first inning of play, with Jason Vargas whiffing Darren Ford and then Ichiro on a pitch in the dirt. Brendan Ryan lined out to center in between.
Then, Danny Hultzen made his first appearance on a mound and was greeted by a 10-pitch walk from Chone Figgins, who fouled the ball off three times with two strikes on him. Hultzen struck out Dustin Ackley on a called K, but then yielded a single to center by Casper Wells and a single jammed into left by Justin Smoak that brought Figgins home for a 1-0 lead. Miguel Olivo hit into a force out at second and the inning was called at that point so as not to tax Hultzen’s arm.
