Felix Hernandez takes on Giants; Mariners send Taijuan Walker, Danny Hultzen, James Paxton to minor league camp

We’re in Scottsdale this afternoon to watch Felix Hernandez take on the San Francisco Giants. Hernandez had a strong showing his last time out last week, hitting the leadoff batter of the game and then getting everyone else out.
Some news to tell you as the Mariners made a series of roster cuts just before gametime with Danny Hultzen, Taijuan Walker and James Paxton the biggest names to be sent to minor league camp. No surprise there. We told you last night the team wasn’t going to keep them once the regular season began. Erasmo Ramirez is the only young starter to reach Class AAA and the team wants to give the other young guys more minor league experience first. They also don’t want to start anyone’s service time clock without need. Ramirez is still in major league camp.
Other names getting cut included LHP Mauricio Robles, RHP Yoervis Medina, INF Francisco Martinez and Carlos Triunfel and OF Johermyn Chavez and Chih-Hsien Chiang. All have been optioned to minor league camp.
Those re-assigned to minor league camp include RHP Scott Patterson and RHP Forrest Snow, C Ralph Henriquez, INF Nick Franklin, OF Darren Ford and DH Luis Jimenez. You option players when they’re already on the 40-man roster and you re-assign them when they are either not on the roster or are on minor league free agent deals.
The Giants took a 2-1 lead in the third, notching consecutive singles by Gregor Blanco and Emmanuel Burriss to open the inning off Felix Hernandez. A rundown play nabbed the lead runner Blanco between third and home on an ensuing grounder, but the trail runners moved up two bases each on the play. That put runners on second and third with one out and a single by Melky Cabrera tied the game. Pablo Sandoval then hit a sacrifice fly to give the Giants their lead.
1:45 p.m.: Seattle leads 1-0 in the third inning, scoring in the second after a two-out double by Vinnie Catricala and an RBI single to left by Michael Saunders.
1:19 p.m.: The Mariners went 1-2-3 in the top of the first. Hernandez returned the favor in the bottom of the inning.
