Gutierrez swinging, not yet ready to throw

As I type this, sounds as if the Mariner brain trust is meeting, discussing cuts and the roster to take to Japan, a trip that begins on Thursday.
One player who won’t be going is center fielder Franklin Gutierrez, who continues to recover from a torn right pectoral muscle suffered Feb. 28 (details here).
Gutierrez will stay behind Peoria while a roster of 30 heads to Japan.
He said this morning he is still unsure when he will return.
He has been able to swing a bat a couple of times in the past week, he said.
“That went fine,” he said. “That’s a good sign, I guess.”
But the real test is when he would be able to throw again. He has yet to try that, and isn’t sure when he will.
“I can’t throw,” he said. “Not now.”
When he’ll try, he said, remains unclear.
“I don’t know when it’s going to happen,” he said.
Gutierrez is a constant presence in the clubhouse here in Peoria, going through a steady stream of exercises, including in the pool.
“Just doing the exercises,” he said. “I don’t know when I’m going to be playing. It just depends on how fast I recover.”
