Daily coverage of the Mariners during the season and all year long.

High speed journey to a slower paced assignment

Sitting here on a bullet train from Tokyo to Kobe attempting something I never
imagined I’d try. Going to see some of Japan’s prestigious

national high school invitational tournament this morning, then will double back to Tokyo to cover the Mariners at their 2:45 p.m. (local time) press conference and workout.

Normally, I wouldn’t cut things this close. Had wanted to go to the tournament yesterday, but heavy rains caused the unusual cancelation of all three games.

Due to time limits here with the Mariners, this would be my last chance. I’m planning a feature on baseball life in Japan but I don’t think you can get a true sense of that sitting in a hotel room, reading the internet or following a scripted program of events.

Sometimes, you have to just get out and do things, so, after a 5:15 a.m. wakeup call today, here I am. It’s about 7:35 a.m. here as I type this in real time, halfway to my destination.

Trying to look out the window, knowing the sights and places I’m seeing are some I will never set eyes on again.

Total round-trip distance today: 530 miles. Thank goodness for the efficiency of Japanese trains.
