Furbush, Peguero are final Mariners cuts

Wednesday’s lineup:
Chone Figgins LF
Dustin Ackley 2B
Ichiro RF
Justin Smoak 1B
Kyle Seager 3B
Brendan Ryan SS
Michael Saunders CF
Casper Wells DH
John Jaso C
Hector Noesi P
In somewhat of a surprise, Alex Liddi made the Mariners’ 25-man roster over Carlos Peguero, and Rule 5 reliever Lucas Luetge is on the squad as well, at the expense of fellow lefty Charlie Furbush.
In their final cuts to get down to a 25-man roster for Friday’s re-opening of the season in Oakland, the Mariners optioned both Peguero and Furbush to Class AAA Tacoma.

That means that two rookies without any major-league experience (minus two days in Japan) will be on the Mariners’ roster: Luetge and Erasmo Ramirez.
And it means that Liddi will provide backup dept at both third base and first base. Since the Mariners also have Kyle Seager, it’s a pretty good indication that manager Eric Wedge plans to use Chone Figgins in left field a lot while Mike Carp is on the disabled list. Figgins is playing left field today in their final Cactus League exhibition against Colorado in Scottsdale. The team buses to the airport after the game and flies to Oakland. They will have a workout tomorrow.
Furbush and Peguero both had strong springs. Furbush had an 0.82 ERA in seven outings (10 1/3 innings). He’ll likely work setup relief in Tacoma, where Shawn Kelley and Chance Ruffin figure to be the late men. Peguero batted .294 with a team-leading five homers, one of which came on Tuesday — one of his four hits in the game. He struck out 18 times in 51 at-bats.
