Brendan Ryan a healthy scratch tonight for Mariners; knee surgery for Carlos Peguero

Brendan Ryan won’t be in tonight’s lineup, with Munenori Kawasaki getting the start at shortstop in his place. We caught up with Ryan in the clubhouse a short time ago and he said his stiff neck is fine and no longer an issue.
So, it looks like manager Eric Wedge is saying something here. Kawasaki looked good the last couple of games and made a great defensive play at second base last night as well. Ryan did not have a good game last night and was on the sidelines the prior game with the neck problem.
Think Wedge is maybe trying to push Ryan along a little? Well, I do and it’s my blog so I’m saying that’s the intention here.

In other news, Carlos Peguero is to have surgery on the medial meniscus in his knee after tearing it while rounding second base the other day in Class AAA. He’ll miss the next four to six weeks while recovering.
Peguero had been off to a good start at the plate and was hitting balls out with regularity. Now, he’ll pretty much be starting his season all over again. Tough break.
Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik just told me there won’t be any major promotions of Class AA outfielders to help the AAA squad in the wake of injuries to Peguero, Mike Wilson and Daren Ford. The team will wait and see whether Ford and Wilson can come back in a relatively short time before deciding on any longer term moves to address the outfield.
Chih-Hsien Chiang had already been called up by the AAA squad before it was known Peguero would need surgery so he’ll stay there for now.
