Mariners lay another egg in their home opener…a big, fat goose egg

Well, at least this wasn’t as bad as last year, when the Mariners were absolutely destroyed in their home opener. This time aound, they were only mildly beaten about, largely with two hands — and their bats — tied behind their collective backs in a 4-0 loss to the Oakland Athletics.
It was the good Bartolo Colon who showed up tonight and held Seattle to three measly hits over eight innings. Come to think of it, the M’s managed just three measly hits all game.
Jemile Weeks closed out the scoring with a solo homer off Charlie Furbush in the ninth.
But the game was already done by then. Seattle’s final chance ended when, after two walks to start the eighth, Chone Figgins grounded into a double play. No, I would not have been bunting Figgins with two on and my team trailing by three.
That would sacrifice an out to move the runners up and even if they both score, you’re still down one with one inning to go. So, no, I was OK with allowing him to swing away. He usually would not get doubled-up — unless he hits the ball right at the pitcher, which he, unfortuantely, did do.
That’s just bad luck. No sense blaming the manager for that one. His team flat out didn’t hit tonight.
Miguel Olivo didn’t help matters with that passed ball in the eighth to help score a key third run by Oakland. Olivo has to stop letting balls get by him. Didn’t cost his team the game tonight, but made a comeback all that less likely.
