Mariners lose a tough one

Well, in 162 games there are going to be a few tough losses.
But you might hope to spread out the kind of defeats the Mariners have had in two of the last three nights over a little longer time span.
Here are the particulars in my game story.
To address a couple of obvious questions:
Felix Hernandez said, as should be expected, that he had no issues coming out after throwing 126 pitches. He said that was “too much” and wasn’t expecting he might go out for another inning.
— Manager Eric Wedge said he didn’t think about making a defensive replacement for Chone Figgins in the ninth — he obviously could have inserted Casper Wells. Figgins’ throw wasn’t close to getting Cleveland pinch-runner Aaron Cunningham with what proved to be the winning run.
As for Brandon League, he said he was just a little off tonight and said the leadoff walk was the killer.
“I was throwing balls,” he said. “I don’t know how else you can describe a walk. The first out is always important, especially the first hitter. … Then (Travis) Hafner (who followed with a single) didn’t get that done. You look on the positive side and you’re always looking to the double-play grounder, being a sinker ball pitcher. Just didn’t get it done tonight.”
He acknowledged it cut just a little more to lose after the way Hernandez pitched.
“When your starter goes eight solid innings and puts out eight innings like that, you always want to get the win,” he said. “It makes it extra tough to lose a one-nothing ball game.’
Here’s Wedge’s post-game meeting with the media:
