Game thread, Mariners vs. Rangers, May 23: Mariners win, 5-3

League gets a 1-2-3 save, getting Cruz on a long fly to right, then striking out Torrealba and pinch-hitter Mike Napoli. M’s take two of three from mighty Rangers.
RANGERS EIGHTH: The Rangers put up three runs to make this one a little more nerve-racking than it appeared to be. Hamilton had a double under Smoak’s glove, followed by a two-run homer by Beltre, all off Tom Wilhelmsen. 5-3 Mariners.
MARINERS SEVENTH: Liddi gets a nice ovation when he comes up with two outs in the seventh. He walked, but Ichiro struck out. Tom Wilhelmsen is coming in to work the eighth — the fourth Mariner reliever since Millwood exited after six shutout innings. 5-0 Mariners.
MARINERS FIFTH: Quite a turn of events: After Feldman walks Ackley intentionally to load the bases with one out, Liddi pounces on his first pitch and rockets a grand slam to left, just over the scoreboard. It was the first of his career, and earned him a curtain call. It’s 5-0 Mariners.
MARINERS FOURTH:Mariners’ only hit through four innings is Liddi’s double in first, but they lead, 1-0.
RANGERS FOURTH: Millwood wriggles out of damage again. The Rangers got runners to second and third with two outs, but Nelson Cruz hit a long fly to right for the third out. 1-0 Mariners.
RANGERS THIRD: Great pitching by Millwood after Liddi botches a high fly into the LF corner by Yorvit Torrealba, which falls for a two-base error. He got Moreland on a comebacker, Kinsler on a fly out, and Andrus, after a wild pitch moved Torrealba to third, on a ground out to second. 1-0 Mariners.
MARINERS SECOND: The Mariners may look back at this inning with regret. Feldman walked the first three hitters, but they could get just one run out of the bases-loaded, no-out situation. That came on a sac fly to deep center by Saunders. Montero moved up to third, but Carp flied out to the shortstop, and Ryan grounded out. 1-0 Mariners.
RANGERS SECOND: Millwood is just an out machine. He works a 1-2-3 second to extend his scoreless streak to 13 innings. 0-0.
MARINERS FIRST: A one-out double by Liddi, but he’s doubled off the bag on a soft liner to second by Ichiro. I’m not sure what’s going to happen when Olivo is activated — he has a homer today for Tacoma, by the way — but the more I think about it, the more I think that Liddi is safe, regardless. He has developed versatility (he can play third, first, left and maybe even shortstop), and offers some pop from the right side. 0-0.
RANGERS FIRST: Millwood gives up a leadoff single to Kinsler — half as many hits as he gave up in his last start over nine innings — but recovers very nicely with a strikeout and two ground outs. 0-0.
The roof is open, but that may not last, judging by the angry sky.
